Black Jurema (Mimosa Hostilis) Black Jurema (Mimosa hostilis Benth.) is a tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, of the Fabales order, typical of the caatinga, occurring practically in almost all of northeastern Brazil. Well adapted to a dry climate, it has small, alternate, compound, bipinnate leaves with several pairs of opposite pinnae. It has thorns and is quite resistant to droughts with a great capacity for regrowth throughout the year. Used by the Indians of the Xucurus-Cariris ethnic group together with the White Jurema (Mimosa verrucosa). It is traditionally used for medicinal and religious purposes. Its bark is used for medicinal purposes and the bark of its root is the part of the plant used in religious ceremonies, and it is also used as a natural dye to dye clothing and leather.
